The MANISTEE ART INSTITUTE was formed by a group of concerned citizens to create a permanent home for Manistee’s artistic legacy and to make the visual arts a part of the daily life of the Manistee region.

With the encouragement of the Ramsdell Theatre Restoration Project Board and a resolution of support from the Manistee City Council, the MAI filed articles of incorporation as a non-profit organization with the State in January of 1995. It has a Federal 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.

The Manistee Art Institute is an all-volunteer organization supported by its members and donations from businesses, corporations and individuals. Ten percent of all membership dues and donations is placed in an endowment account to assure future achievement of MAI objectives.

The MAI is located in the T. Walter Hardy Exhibit Hall at the historic Ramsdell Theatre.
